Historical Commission

The Historical Commission is a Town Board, appointed by the Select Board. It has responsibility for historic preservation in the Town under state law Massachusetts General Law Chapter 40, Section 8D.

What are the differences between the Historical Commission and the Arts and Historical Society in Berlin? The roles of these two organizations are often confused. They share common goals to preserve the history and culture of the Town or City in which they serve. Here is a brief description of their different roles:

  • The Historical Commission is a town-appointed board that conducts research, provides information, and advises other boards and agencies on historical or archeological matters. It inventories historical assets in the town, submits reports to the state, and facilitates Demolition Delay determinations according to the town bylaw. Its aim is to protect and preserve the historic character of the districts.

The Berlin Art & Historical Society is a non-profit set up to preserve, maintain and share the town's historical collection. The Society presents programs to both educate and engage the community in historic preservation and takes the lead in renovation projects as needed.
