About the Berlin Fire & EMS Department

On February 1, 2016 was the official birthday of the Berlin Fire & EMS Department. On this date the Town through past Town Meeting voted to combine the Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management Departments into one.

The department is headed by Interim Fire/EMS Chief Kenneth Clark. The department is a paid on call department, consisting of 45 Firefighters, EMT’s and Officers protecting a residential population of approximately 3,000 and an area of 13.1 square miles. We also have Solomon Pond and Highland Commons Malls that are in our community. These business districts along with Route 495 bring in thousands of people into and through Berlin each day.

As a call department, the members are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and respond to your emergency calls from their homes, places of business or any other location, at a moment’s notice.

In an average year, we respond to about 800 calls, of all types, from fire suppression, to hazardous materials containment, motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies and generally assisting the public in a variety of ways. In addition to responding to incidents, the department is responsible for implementing a wide variety of permits, inspections and fire details as required by the laws of Massachusetts.

It is in this tradition that the department has served the community since 1882.
