Private Well Water Testing Program; RCAP Solutions

Act now for Sept/Oct 2021 testing opportuntites

Private well owners in Berlin have two options to get their private well water tested. RCAP Solutions is offering  complimentary well assessments and water tests through the North Central Massachusetts Private Well  Program. RCAP Solutions will be testing for common contaminants including; Arsenic, Chloride, Copper,  Fluoride, Hardness, Iron, Lead, Manganese, pH, Sodium, Coliform Bacteria, Nitrate/Nitrite, Uranium, and  Radon. RCAP Solutions will not be testing for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) through this  program. When completing the in-person well assessments, RCAP Solutions staff are required to wear face  coverings and practice social distancing. For the water test, homeowners will receive an easy-to-use sampling  kit and will be instructed on how to collect water samples from their tap. RCAP Solutions staff will not be  entering your home and will collect as much information as possible ahead of our visit to your well.

Interested homeowners should visit https://www.rcapsolutions.org/ma-private-wells/ to request a  complimentary well assessment and water test. Requests are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. To  receive these grant-funded services, homeowners will be required to participate in pre- and post-assessment  questionnaires which will inform a study of private well knowledge in the North Central Massachusetts region. Well assessments and water testing will be scheduled to occur during regular business hours, Monday  through Friday only. Forty (40) slots are available in each town. After the assessment and water test is  complete, RCAP Solutions will educate the homeowner on what their water test results show and work directly  with the owner if there is a need for remediation efforts.

The other program available to private well owners in Berlin is MassDEP’s Private Well PFAS Sampling  Program. No home visit will be made through this program. Eligible applicants will receive an easy-to-use  sampling kit and return them to MassDEP free of charge. Due to COVID-19 concerns, residents will be  instructed on how to collect the water samples; MassDEP staff or state contractors will not need to visit a well  for the free PFAS Sampling Program. MassDEP will provide the results of the testing to the well owner, along  with technical assistance on any recommended steps to take based on the results. Interested homeowners should  visit https://dwp-pfas.madwpdep.org/ to register for a free private well drinking water sampling kit.

For both programs, water test results, well locations, and well information will be shared with local boards of  health and partner organizations.
