Parking Regulations - New - as Voted by Select Board 9-13-2021

PARKING REGULATIONS - Town of Berlin, MA

 1. General Prohibitions

No person shall park a vehicle and no person shall allow, permit or suffer any vehicle registered in his or her name to be parked in any of the following places:

(a) Within an intersection.

(b) Upon a sidewalk.

(c) Upon or within ten (10) feet of any crosswalk.

(d) Upon any street or highway upon accumulation of two (2) inches of snow and until twenty-four (24) hours after the snowfall has ceased.

(e) Adjacent to any center division strip or island placed upon and being a part of any street or highway.

(f) Upon a roadway where parking is permitted unless both wheels on the right side of the vehicle are within twelve (12) inches of the curb or edge of the roadway, except on those streets that are designated as one-way streets. On such one-way streets, vehicles shall be parked in the direction of permitted travel and with both wheels within twelve (12) inches of the curb or edge of the roadway.

(g) On the roadway side of any vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street in such a manner as to constitute double line or multiple line parking.

(h) Upon any roadway where the parking of a vehicle will not leave a clear and unobstructed lane at least ten (10) feet wide for passing traffic.

(i) Upon any street or highway within ten (10) feet of a fire hydrant.

(j) Upon or in front of any private road or driveway without the consent of the owner of said private road or driveway.

(k) Upon any street or highway, within twenty (20) feet of an intersecting way.

(l) On bridges or approaches thereto.

(m) Upon any street or highway where the parking of a vehicle will obstruct or hide from view any traffic control signal or detector.

(n) Within a designated turnaround.

(o) Within a bicycle lane.

(p) Within a Fire Lane.

(q) Within a handicap zone without proper authority.

(r) Within a Tow Zone

(s) Overnight on any public way

 2.  Parking within Designated Spaces

Each vehicle shall be entirely within the painted lines designated for its individual use.

3.  Parking Vehicles for Sale Prohibited

It shall be unlawful for any person to park upon a street, highway, or off-street parking area controlled by the Town, any vehicle displayed for sale.

 4.  Repairing of Vehicles

No person shall repair, wash or clean vehicles or other conveyances or cause them to be repaired, washed, or cleaned in or upon any public way or municipal parking area, nor shall any person occupy any part of a public way or off-street parking area controlled by the Town as storage for any vehicle. In the event of an emergency, temporary repairs may be made.

PENALTIES FOR PARKING VIOLATIONS

 

Pursuant to the authority granted by Chapter 90 Section 20C of the General Laws parking of motor vehicles shall be punished by a fine for each offense as hereinafter set forth:

Group A - $20.00

  1. Within intersection
  2. Upon sidewalk or crosswalk
  3. Parking against the direction of travel (Wrong Direction)
  4. Wheels greater than twelve (12) inches from the edge of pavement
  5. Less than ten (10) feet of unobstructed lane
  6. Within ten (10) feet of a hydrant
  7. Upon a private road or across a driveway
  8. Within twenty (20) feet of an intersection
  9. Upon a street or highway posted no parking
  10. Snowfall greater than two (2) inches
  11. Improper parking
  12. Restricted area
  13. Vehicle for sale

Group B - $25.00

1. Snow Removal

Group C - $200.00

  1. In a handicap zone without proper authority

Group D - $100.00

  1. In a Tow Zone
