Hurricane Season 2022 (June 1st thru November 30th)

With June comes the arrival of the Atlantic Ocean Hurricane season (the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th).

This year, NOAA is expecting a busy storm season as ocean temperature levels are above normal. In 2022, they anticipate the arrival of 14-21 named storms.

In preparation for storm season, there are a number of preventive measures that can be taken in advance to prevent or mitigate damage from heavy winds. Many of these measures can be taken now to lessen the burden of last-minute efforts when an actual storm is imminent.

Below is a checklist to guide you through your pre-storm inspections.

• Roofs: Inspect your roofs for damage. Determine if additional fasteners or strapping is necessary to secure your roofs.
• Drains & Gutters: Clear drains and gutters to allow for water to drain away from your buildings.
• Rooftop Systems: Ensure that rooftop ventilation and air conditioning units are properly secured.
• Air Conditioners: Ensure window air conditioning units are properly secured or brought inside.
• Trees: If possible, trim back tree limbs and shrubs near buildings.
• Window Protection; If tree limbs or shrubs cannot be trimmed in time, consider boarding windows with 5/8” marine plywood in high exposure areas.
• Potential Airborne Items: Move trash cans, tables, chairs, barbeque grills, etc., inside. Secure outdoor equipment.
• Storm Drains: Clear storm water drains in areas where flooding is likely.
• Vehicles: Position to avoid damage to the vehicle and permit exit from the property.
• Fuels: Obtain sufficient fuel for emergency response as gas stations may be closed during power outages.
• Generators: Test ALL generators to ensure they remain operational and venting outdoors (do not operate generators indoors).
• Basement Storage: If basements are prone to water penetration, move contents to higher ground and prepare sump pumps.
• Communications: Plan for loss of electricity with transistor radios with batteries, charge cell phones, and power banks. Have communication plans with family members and friends.
