Burn Permits

Brush Burning Procedures for Berlin Residents

Seasonal brush burning permits will be available online only.  Residents can visit the Town of Berlin Fire Department website to access a link where permits may be obtained. There is no cost for a brush burning permit. The link will take you to the Massachusetts Fire District 8 Brush Burning site. Follow the directions on the site.

Once obtained, residents requesting permission to burn can go to the website where they will find if brush burning is allowed on that particular day. If burning is allowed, you will enter your permit number and authorization code in order to be placed on the burning list for that day. If brush burning is not allowed, a message will be displayed on the website indicating such.

You must go to the website between the hours of 8:00 A.M and 12:00 P.M. to enter your permit number and authorization code each day you wish to burn. The decision to allow brush burning on a particular day is based on the Massachusetts State Fire Weather Forecast as well as the Department of Environmental Protection Agency (DEP) decision on atmospheric conditions.

You may obtain on-line permits beginning January 10, 2018. The burning season is January 15 to May 1. Burning hours are 10:00 A.M. to 4 P.M. Fires must be completely extinguished by 4:00 P.M.

If you have questions regarding the procedures, you may contact the fire department at 978-838-2444 Monday thru Friday between the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 5 P.M. For further information on open air burning, please visit the following mass.gov websites below.
