| In the year 2004, when a new
POLICE CRUISER was to be chosen, the officer's at the
Berlin Police Dept. gathered together to discuss what
new technologies and other features were needed to best
benefit the special concerns of the Town of
Berlin. After that was decided the fun part began
- the design of the outside of the cruiser was to be
decided by the school children of Berlin Memorial.
The officers submitted two designs to the children. Since it was an election year and to teach the children about the election first hand, two "parties" were designated one design each. The children then had to conduct a campaign to get as many children to "vote" for their design as possible. It was fun for all and the resulting design is now displayed on the new Black & White Cruiser. New features include updated computer technology with a mobile data terminal for instant checking of license and registration, front and rear radar units, a 2-way radio, 3 radio's and scanner that allows the officer to monitor other towns if necessary or listen to State Police frequencies. The new cruiser is also equipped with a Cage-Prisoner Barrier with safety glass, screen and reinforced with steel plates. The new model has also been designed to require less maintenance. The former light bar on the roof was eliminated and the LED lights are now located in the windshield and back window.
