Chief Clifford H. Wheeler |
Clifford
H. Wheeler was born April 30, 1900 in Berlin, MA. He entered Law
Enforcement as a Patrolman in 1935. Throughout the years of
1933-1934, his brother Roland was Chief of Police and seventeen years later,
in 1951, he also became Chief, retiring in 1965.
Cliff performed lots of other jobs including town Moderator, Fire Chief, Forest Warden, Dogcatcher and Selectman. He served on the Finance Committee, Welfare Department and was a State Deputy in the Grange Organization. He and his wife Addie had four children. The boys, Clifford Herbert Jr. went on to become a Massachusetts State Trooper for 13 years and Henry A. followed his father as Chief in Berlin for 27 years. All his life he served in any capacity that would benefit the town and its people. All these functions were volunteer and he took great pleasure in helping people and much pride in his town. His home and personal car served as the Police station and cruiser. As a wholesale florist, living on his 22-acre farm, he was always available and willing to go when the calls came in. |
