COA Van Driver

Fire/EMS Chief

The Town of Berlin MA (pop. 3,096) is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Fire/EMS Chief. This position is becoming vacant after a well-respected Massachusetts Fire Chief guided fire and EMS services into a single fire rescue organization. The new fire chief will guide forward the newly merged Fire and EMT operations.

 

The Town of Berlin is located 40 miles west of Boston, Massachusetts and the Department covers an area of 13.1 square miles from a public safety complex.  The Town is a prosperous and growing community with an expanding residential and commercial base.  The Department is an ISO Class 8 full-service fire/rescue and EMS organization that has a total of 4 fulltime personnel, 41 fire/EMS/Emergency Management personnel, of which 22 are EMT’s. The Fire Chief also serves as the EMD, fire warden and alternate member of the Nashoba Valley Regional Dispatch District Operations Board. There are a total of approximately 652 fire and EMS calls per year. The current annual operating budget of the Fire Department is approximately $763,529.

 

The Fire Chief is appointed by the Board of Selectmen. Candidates must have strong leadership and managerial skills combined with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A proven, successful record of experience in progressively responsible supervisory, administrative and command assignments is also required.

 

Minimum qualifications include: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college, Master’s Degree highly preferred; residency within a 30-minute automobile commute from the Berlin town border; service in a Chief Officer’s position for at least 2 years and a minimum of 10 years of fire service experience with a familiarity of all positions within a Fire/EMS Department command structure; active Massachusetts EMT Certification; completion of Incident Command ICS-400 and 800a; credentialing of Chief Fire Officer through the Massachusetts Fire Service Commission or Executive Fire Officer (EFO) designation through the National Fire Academy, or satisfactory completion of an equivalent combination of courses for Fire Officer I, II, III, Incident Safety Officer, Tactics and Strategy for the Company Officer, Leadership, Command and Control, and other courses that provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job; Fire Officer IV Certification within 12 months of hire.

 

Candidates must have demonstrated experience and skill within the following critical areas: budgeting, crafting collaborative interagency relationships, pacing change, fireground management, incident command and emergency management.

Building Commissioner (fka Building Inspector)

The Town of Berlin is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Building Commissioner. Administrative, supervisory, and inspection skills related to enforcement and interpretation of the state building code, local bylaws, zoning bylaws, and all applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations is required.

 

Must have 5 years of supervisory experience in building construction, or have completed a four year undergraduate education from an accredited college or university in a field related to building construction; or any combination of training and experience so as to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.

Successful candidate must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license, a Construction Supervisor’s License and Massachusetts Certification as a Building Commissioner. The position is non-union. Salary $85K+, DOQ&E.
