POSITION FILLED – Building Inspector
The Town of Berlin is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Building Inspector to take office effective July 1, 2017. Administrative, supervisory, and inspection skills related to enforcement and interpretation of the state building code, local bylaws, zoning bylaws, and all applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations is required. Must have 5 years of supervisory experience in building construction, or have completed a four year undergraduate education from an accredited college or university in a field related to building construction; or any combination of training and experience so as to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work. Successful candidate must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license, a Construction Supervisor’s License and Massachusetts Certification as a Building Commissioner. The position is non-union. POSITION FILLED: Public Safety Administrative Assistant
The Town of Berlin Police and Fire Departments are together currently accepting applications for one shared full time Administrative Assistant. Responsibilities include routine to complex administrative support, clerical, secretarial and record keeping work related to the function of the office of the Police/Fire Chief and the operation of the Public Safety Departments, assist walk-in, and other tasks as deemed necessary. The position may require work outside of normal business hours to accommodate workflow fluctuations.
Minimum requirements of a high school diploma supplemented by courses in office procedures, typing, computers and undergraduate courses in business administration or related field. Three years of progressive clerical and administrative experience; experience dealing with the public preferred. Applicants must be able to pass a thorough background investigation.

POSITION FILLED: Interim Fire and EMS Chief
The Town of Berlin, Massachusetts (pop. 2,900) seeks an experienced and qualified individual for the position of Interim Fire and EMS Chief. Appointed under M.G.L. Ch. 48, Section 42 by the Board of Selectmen, the temporary position will be filled until completion of a search and appointment of a full time fire chief who will be succeeding the incumbent retiring Fire Chief and Rescue Squad Chiefs. The Interim Fire and EMS Chief plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the newly combined Fire and EMS (BLS) service (merger effective February 1, 2016) including fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical services, disaster planning, hazardous material mitigation, and emergency management functions if also appointed as Emergency Management Director. The department consists of 32 call firefighters and 30 call EMT/First Responders.
A Bachelor’s degree in fire science or administration or related field and a minimum of 10 years of broad experience in all phases of professional firefighting and emergency medical service delivery is required. Position requires excellent supervision and interpersonal communication, verbal and written skills. Experience with departments in transition is pertinent.
A valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license, Massachusetts Fire Academy Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer I/II, Fire Instructor I/II all with Pro Board Certification and Massachusetts or National EMT-Basic certification required. National or Massachusetts Fire Academy Chief Fire Officer Certification preferred. Position will require proof of NIMS 100-400 and 800.
Salary range is subject to qualifications and negotiation will be paid weekly based on a monthly contract for services.
